The Dual Nature of Matter - The blog

Mixing on a Sunday morning

I was mixing a new track earlier today.  Here's a little video of the action.

New track: Red lights, yellow lights (Sunday morning mix)

I don't usually record dance music, but playing around with various instrument rack configurations and the cross-fader in Ableton Live ended up in my first real dance-able one.  It's not very creative, but I quite like it.

New music: Walking Through Eternity

Last night I was watching some video of Laura Escudé showing how she used Ableton Live.  I had also just installed Max for Live (M4L )and wanted to play around with incorporating M4L instruments and effects into instrument racks.  The result, a 22 minute ambient, evolving, drone

Studio Updates

I have made a few updates to the studio recently

  • Went back to the Alesis QS7 as my master controller.  I never got used to playing a 25-key board, and I have such a nice 76-key one and it even fits on my desk
  • I got a second Korg NanoKontrol.  The first one acts as a mixer and transport control for Ableton Live and the second one controls synths.  Of course, I continue to love my Novation Launchpad
  • I finally bit the bullet and got Max for Live.  Really looking forward to exploring more with it

Details of the studio are on my wiki

Here are a couple of pictures of the rig (before the second NanoKontrol)

New music: Acetylation - Original Mix

On a recent flight from Dulles to Seattle, I finished a song I started writing while visiting China.  The song owes inspiration to the recently discovered Four Tet

New music: All that shimmers

All that shimmers by The Dual Nature of Matter

As some folks know, I recently lost a lot of new music I had recorded, some of it among the better work I had written in a while . Alas it happened just a week or so before my Drobo came in (I had stopped automatic backups while I waited for it ... go figure). Anyway, this is the first little ditty that I've written since. Nothing special at all, just something I wrote up sitting on a couch at home on Saturday evening

Sound Design choices by Jim Stout

A nice video by Jim Stout on sound design.  Calls out Alchemy, which is one of my favorite instruments these days, and Reaktor

Just got a new computer

By a quirk of fate, and great Apple customer service, I now own a Core I5 2010 15" Macbook Pro.  More juice, more disk space.  This will continue to be my primary music production machine.  I have the details of my rig here
